Il progetto

obiettivi

The CAREGA project (an acronym for Certified charcoal for the active recovery of the economy and the environmental management of “Piccole Dolomiti Vicentine”) aims to optimize the local forest-wood supply chain, efficiently using all the parts that can be obtained from the trees. It wants to transform low-value material into a high added value product, such as charcoal. In this way, it can enhance wood products with zero value, such as chestnut trunks affected by ring shake.

obiettivi

The CAREGA project sees the involvement of 7 partners, representatives of the forestry sector, of research sector and of communication and training sector.

The project has the objective to increase the quality and the economic value of the wood products, through the construction of an innovative plant to produce charcoal. This charcoal plant will permit the market recovery of those part of the wood products which currently have insufficient productivity. Moreover, it will allow improving the quality of the woodlands, also creating new types of forest economy and better care, protection and resiliency of the territory.

These goals can be achieved in two ways:

  • enhancing timber residues with zero value through the conversion in charcoal. There will be the implementation of a pilot innovative plant which promotes the entire valorisation of the tree, according to the cascading approach;
  • aggregating woodland parcels with innovative contractual forms, to promote the active forest management and to improve the wood mobilisation.

Firstly, Consortium RE-CORD will produce the innovative plant to produce charcoal and it will test and assess it, using the wood material produced by the members of Associazione Forestale Vicentina, Dal Molin Graziano and Rubbo Simone. Beside this activity, there is going to be market research to identify the product potentialities, carried out by the Association PEFC Italy.

With the second one, the management contracts of the forest properties will be analysed by Etifor Srl, also considering European examples, and afterwards tested.
